Presentation Abstract

This presentation looks at some recent public emotional breakdowns to show that smart people are not immune to dumb mistakes when it comes to emotional intelligence. These dumb mistakes are often career limiting moves. Just as important are those not-so-obvious breakdowns that happen when we are not charismatic or we lack in interpersonal skills. Otherwise great project managers may find their careers slowed or stalled based on their ability to relate to, influence, or get along with others.

Research shows that emotional intelligence is just as important to project managers as IQ or knowledge of the PMBOK® Guide. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage our own emotions and those of others. When project managers understand emotional intelligence, they are able to avoid emotional breakdowns, develop charisma, nurture strong relationships with team members and stakeholders, and improve their chance of project and career success.
